Scrum master Frank and his team were in the middle of a vision workshop, a 2-day offsite session, when an important notification came in. “Enexis wanted to change the access management on SharePoint from default open to default closed immediately. In other words: work that we planned to spread over a 3-week sprint had to be done right away. We paused the workshop and got to work. We managed to do it in just one day! The following week, we fully focused on handling all the resulting notifications, around 500 of them. The way we worked together as a team and accomplished so much, gave a really satisfying feeling.”

Pride

That team success during the vision workshop is one of the moments Frank is most proud of. He has been working at Enexis since 2021, but even before that, he discovered what a great organization it is to work for. “In 2020, I was involved as a Microsoft 365 consultant on a temporary basis for the cloud migration. The team I joined then and the overall atmosphere in the organization really suited me. Moreover, I was ready for a permanent position. So, I took the chance to join permanently as an information analyst.”

Eye for process improvements

“As an information analyst, I was already working on quality improvement,” Frank continues. “I had an eye for improving processes and was always involved in coordinating them. When the current scrum master – who was also a contractor and whose assignment was ending – asked if I wanted to become a scrum master, I realized that this role suited me well. I really value the chance Enexis gave me to explore this role with a trial period.”

Dual role

Frank is still part of the team he immediately felt at home in. “My team manages everything around Microsoft 365. Our goal? Ensuring the organization can collaborate digitally effectively. I see my role as a scrum master as twofold. I make sure the people in the team feel good and enjoy their work. And that we deliver value as a team for the organization. While my team doesn’t literally dig into the ground, if everything crashes on our end, the entire organization has a problem. So, our work is very important.”

Creating team spirit

Despite Frank and his team members working across the country – from Groningen to the south of Limburg – it feels like a close-knit group with a lot of humor, he says. “Since we work from home about 75% of the time, it’s quite a challenge to create that team spirit. As a scrum master, I facilitate that process. From coordinating weekly team days to leading retrospectives where we also look at improvements in how we work together. I listen to the signals from the team and bring team members together to think about solutions. This way, I ensure they are as self-sufficient as possible.”

“What do I like most about my role? The variety. I support the team with so many different things. From recruitment and resolving potential conflicts to promoting collaboration with other departments. Moreover, I get the chance to also contribute partly on the content side. For example, I’m currently working on introducing confidentiality labels to classify data. This variety in my work suits me well.”
