Data, as a grid operator we cannot do without it. The energy network is becoming increasingly complex due to the various sustainable energy sources. At Enexis, based on countless measurement data, we decide policy and take decisions to keep the transport of gas and electricity safe, affordable and reliable. As a data engineer, Max contributes to this. “Together, with my colleagues, I manage and maintain the Enexis data landscape.” He summarises his role: “It’s a field I stumbled into during my internship. It’s been a super fun challenge from the start!” 

Discovering a new field

In early 2022, Max started his graduation assignment for his IT bachelor’s degree at Enexis. "I knew a bit about what a network operator does, but I hadn't realised how much IT is involved. That became clear to me during the intake interview for my internship. I could choose from several interesting assignments." During this period, he also had the opportunity to discover the field of data engineering. "I was not familiar with this work at all. I spent two days a week with the Data System Team, and the other three days I worked on my graduation project. After my internship, the team offered me a job. I didn't have to think about it for long!

Contributing to process improvement

Max and his colleagues ensure that the Snowflake data cloud platform runs stably every day. He also contributes to the development of the platform and the management and maintenance of the ETL tool, Matillion. "I’ve learned a lot in a short time. I do most of the work independently now. And if I make a good proposal for a process improvement, I also get the space to work on it. For example, we receive requests from teams throughout the organisation to roll out data software. We were doing that with many manual steps. I proposed to automate this process with Python. I was allowed to work on that, and it’s really cool that we’re now using it!” 

Involved in everything

Max knows that his environment encourages showing initiative and seizing opportunities. "I work in a small, close-knit team of data engineers. Everyone is there for each other and helps each other. And I’m involved in everything. For instance, the company behind Snowflake regularly asks us to test beta versions, enabling the platform to meet new requirements. I participate in that too. If I want to know more about a process or system that’s still unknown to me, there’s always room to take a look.
