“THE MORE I LEARN ABOUT OUR UNIQUE GEOSYSTEMS, THE MORE THEY FASCINATE ME.”

Max is a functional manager at Enexis

As an audio-visual designer, how did you get the job of functional manager? And for one of Enexis’ most important systems, no less? Max explains. “At Enexis, they think along with you. You can follow courses. Personal and career growth are encouraged. Don’t be afraid to go for what you want because are really good opportunities available.”

Kind of like Google Maps

Max admits that his new job wasn’t easy at first. “That's because our GEN Small Worlds geographic information system is really niche. It’s a unique system. Kind of like Google Maps (you can also zoom in) for all the Enexis cables, pipes, stations, valves and switches. So it’s very extensive and complex. My work was pretty tough at first, but challenging and satisfying at the same time.”

Max - Geo and Functional Manager

More and more interesting

Max wasn’t a functional manager when he joined Enexis in 2018. “I had studied media design, which is completely different. But I was also interested in systems, so I became an AutoCAD draftsman at a technical company. An employment agency soon approached me about a job as a technical draftsman at Enexis. In that role, I had a lot of contact with a functional manager and soon realised it was the job for me. The more I learned about the systems, the more interesting I found them. A new team manager gave me the opportunity to move into work planning and then into engineering.”

''I REALLY ENJOY THE FREEDOM WE GET AT ENEXIS. I DECIDE WHETHER TO WORK FROM HOME OR AT THE OFFICE IN TILBURG OR DEN BOSCH. I ALSO GET TO DECIDE WHEN I WORK AND HOW TO ORGANISE MY TASKS.''

Learning on the job

Max was an engineering employee when he applied internally for the role of functional manager. He was not immediately hired. “The manager was enthusiastic but had doubts about my knowledge of the system. After a phone call and another conversation, I managed to convince him with my knowledge of how the system worked. I learned on the job exactly how it all worked and how everything worked in terms of code. Now I am the link between users and the ICT coding professionals. If users want an adjustment or if something is wrong, I'll talk to them via an intake. Then I'll hand over the assignment to the developers."

Decide where and when you work

“I really enjoy the freedom we get at Enexis. I decide whether to work from home or at the office in Tilburg or Den Bosch. And when. Sometimes it's more convenient to solve an issue when no one is online, for example late at night. In that case, I'll just start a little later the next day.”
