Wanda developed an affinity for cybersecurity at a previous job as an ICT specialist. She became so enthusiastic about it and the associated challenges and impact that she started looking for a full-time position as a security analyst. The vacancy at Enexis immediately caught her eye. “It’s so cool knowing that I help keep such a crucial infrastructure safe. Imagine if a bad actor penetrated our operational network. The consequences would be huge!” 

Variety and challenge

According to Wanda, no two days are the same when working in the Security Operations Center (SOC) at Enexis. “There is so much happening in the world. Someone finding a new way to hack a system is almost a daily occurrence. That’s why vulnerability management is so important: We investigate any vulnerabilities in our systems and ensure that they are resolved ASAP. We receive signals from services such as the National Cyber Security Center and keep an eye on the news and tech blogs. We also ensure that all the system administrators in our organisation carry out timely updates. Considering how many diverse and large systems Enexis uses, you can understand how big this challenge is.”

A fullfilling job

Wanda's team is also alert to incidents. “Let's say an employee downloaded something via a phishing link. Or someone's laptop has been stolen. We take immediate action. Enexis has such an extensive and important energy network that you can't ignore a single incident. We examine everything according to the four-eye principle and intervene when necessary. Knowing that you’ve outfoxed a possible digital intruder is really satisfying.”

Space for your own ideas

The SOC is also tasked with the important job of continuously improving the security processes. Wanda: “For example, we have fully automated the system for disabling vulnerability reports. It was a big job but it resulted in a very efficient system. We’re proud of it! I have a great team. Everyone listens to each other's ideas. If you have a good plan, you’ll get the space to implement it. We also keep in touch with each other throughout the day, even when working from home. We’ll use Chat to discuss a vulnerability that one of us has discovered or how we will deal with an incident. It’s dynamic and exciting.”
