Continuous learning and development. According to Renier, that’s typical for Enexis! He himself grew into his role as a product owner for Employee Workflows, where he is responsible for the ServiceNow platform. This platform is constantly evolving to support Enexis colleagues across the board. “Initially, the platform was focused on IT,” Renier explains. “But more and more departments see the benefit of process automation through ServiceNow. "It's wonderful to see how pleased users are with the advantages they gain from a new module or application through our platform. And that they all have positive experiences using the products.”

Automating internal employee processes

With ServiceNow, Renier and his team offer an up-to-date platform where development teams can easily and independently set up modules. “These are applications to automate and improve internal employee processes,” he explains. “For example, IT Solutions & Support uses our platform to improve IT services and request IT resources. The Security Operations Center of IT Service Management processes uses it, among other things, to register and prioritize security incidents. And Facility Management uses it to easily book workspaces and manage lease car requests. The time these teams save can be used to work on achieving the energy transition.”

Encouraging business units

As a product owner, Renier maps out user needs together with his stakeholders. “I advise on the best way to set up processes on the platform according to the right quality standards. And I organize platform-related upgrades and integrations with other systems. As a team, we ensure a safe, stable and manageable environment with the opportunity to apply new technologies. The goal is for teams and DevOps engineers to have and develop the knowledge to set up their modules as much as possible. Of course, within our frameworks for structure, quality and security.”

Renier's role goes further. “Together with our product manager, I encourage business units that don’t yet use ServiceNow. And I help business units that already use our platform but could utilize it even better. I prioritize our team’s work based on our vision and goals. Where necessary, I organize additional info meetings or give demos to excite our stakeholders and internal customers and gather feedback.”

From process manager to product owner

Not only about the platform but also about his role as a product owner, Renier is very enthusiastic. “I’ve been doing this since 2022,” he smiles. “Before that, I had already gained substantial experience in IT. After studying information management, I worked for 14 years in various roles at a large telecom company; from project leader to process manager. After experiencing almost every IT department there, it was time to look outside. So I applied for a position as an IT process manager at Enexis. During the interviews, it already felt like an environment with a pleasant, open atmosphere where everyone is excited about the direction the company is heading. After 12 years, nothing has changed about that atmosphere.”

Transition to agile

When Renier started at Enexis, the IT teams mainly worked on a project basis. “At the end of the project, often after several months, the real results didn’t become visible until the end. At the beginning of 2021, we transitioned to an agile way of delivering products. Now we work in 3-week sprints. This allows us to respond quickly to business needs and deliver much faster and more concrete value. And it significantly reduces the risk of building something that ends up not being used. Enexis is known for giving us plenty of room to contribute our ideas during such transformations. This way, I have an impact on innovation and progress in my work environment!”
