“Together with my team, I truly help Enexis colleagues move forward”

Erik is a test engineer at Enexis

He wanted to do relevant work for society, like contributing to the energy transition. That was reason enough for test engineer Erik to leave the financial sector behind after 10 years and switch to Enexis. Now he tests software to make workflows more efficient, so technicians can connect businesses to our power grid faster. “It's a turbulent environment because there's so much to do,” Erik laughs. “That's exactly what I like. Plus, I get a lot of freedom and trust to organize my work.”

Quickly switching between different projects

Together with 12 colleagues, Erik uses Mendix to develop improved workflow processes. Work that he says is never finished. “It covers all the processes from the application to the connection of large consumers. Often, legal regulations apply. For example, reporting on nitrogen emissions during connection work. Additionally, users – Enexis colleagues and contractors working with our systems – come with improvement requests. Think of an additional module for project planning. And sometimes we need to fix bugs. The variety and the fast switching between projects alone make my role interesting.”

Work with satisfaction

One project lasts a few weeks, another a few months. “But I’m always involved as a tester at the beginning of a project,” Erik continues. “So I know exactly what the user wants and how we can integrate that into an existing system. I test the technical specifications and view it from the user's perspective to ensure the software meets the needs. This way, as a team, we develop software that truly helps Enexis colleagues move forward. Recently, we implemented something that saved a lot of time in a workflow. That gives a lot of satisfaction.”

Discovering the usefulness of innovations

There is a lot of work to be done for Erik and his team. Still, they regularly get the opportunity to explore innovations. Erik: “Every few months, we have a hackathon with the testers. We tackle themes focused on innovating and improving our quality control. We investigate whether a particular tool is applicable within Enexis and in what way. We also examine other test tools, integration methods or reporting options. It's great to renew my own work in this way.”

Working on development

“There is also a lot of focus for me as a person here,” Erik concludes. “At my previous employer in the financial sector, my role was strictly defined. These are your responsibilities, that’s it. There were no opportunities to push your boundaries. Here, if you take the initiative, you can even make steps in a completely different direction. For example, I’m soon starting a product owner course during work hours and at Enexis’s expense. Maybe that will be the next step in my career. Within the organization, because I really enjoy it here.”
