“I enjoy keeping an eye on team dynamics and encouraging collaboration.”

Siyawash is a scrum master at Enexis

After Siyawash led a few reviews as a cloud engineer on behalf of the current scrum master, his team members were super enthusiastic. When they asked him if the role would suit him, he initially thought it wouldn’t. After some self-reflection during a vacation in Mexico, he realized: this job does suit me. “I now have the social contact that I missed in my previous role. I haven’t regretted my career switch for a moment!”

Full circle

“I never considered that I could become a scrum master,” Siyawash continues. “Especially since I had already mapped out my career in IT. This role was so different. A scrum master focuses much more on people and less on technology. That didn’t fit together in my head. But I just needed to get used to the idea, and I got to know myself better by thinking about it. I actually enjoy focusing on the people and collaboration within the team. At the beginning of my college years, I studied psychology for a while, so it feels like I’ve come full circle now.”

Discovering qualities

Under the guidance of the current scrum master, Siyawash had the chance to explore the role. Six months later, his mentor retired, and Siyawash took over his position. “Looking back, I realize that I missed the social aspect in my previous role. I was very focused on my own work and spent a lot of time programming independently. Through this switch, I’ve discovered qualities I didn’t know I had, like coaching team members. I enjoy keeping an eye on team dynamics and encouraging collaboration.”

Serving the team

Siyawash leads a team of 13 colleagues, including software developers, cloud engineers, and technical administrators. “As a scrum master, I serve this team. I ensure my colleagues work as efficiently as possible while also enjoying their work. I remove obstacles so they can focus on the core business.” And what is that core business? “Developing and managing the GEN Smallworld application, where technicians can see, for example, where pipes are located and what they are used for. Additionally, we ensure that other feature teams working on the development of GEN can do their work by maintaining the IT infrastructure and performing tasks like patching.”

Satisfaction

Where does Siyawash find the most satisfaction? Contributing to the development of his team members. “Seeing someone grow gives me energy. Look at myself; I made a great step thanks to the other scrum master. From my role, I can contribute to someone’s career path, but also to smaller growth steps. Ensuring the team runs better makes me happy.”

Room to grow

This focus on development not only characterizes Siyawash but is also typical for Enexis. "They think about who I am as a person and which development opportunities suit me. Then, I actually get the freedom to take advantage of those opportunities. That’s what I appreciate most about Enexis.”
